Inside a Pointe Fitting at From the Top

A 15-minute pointe fitting isn't a pointe fitting. It's a guess — a best-effort match between a dancer and a shoe based on whatever's in stock that day.

We don't do that here.

What we do is called Precision Pointe Fitting — a 30 to 60 minute process built around the dancer in front of us, not the inventory on our shelves. We pull two or three brands across multiple boxes and shanks. We watch the dancer move. We check things most stores don't check. And by the time you walk out, we know — and you know — that the shoes on your feet are the right ones for this season of your dancing.

Before we open a single box

Every fitting starts the same way: with a conversation. How long has she been on pointe? How many hours a week is she dancing? What brand and style is she in now, and what's working or not working? Any pain, blisters, or pressure points we should know about?

If she's local, we hope we've already met her at one of our Up Next pointe orientations — our pre-fitting education sessions for dancers preparing for their first pair. Dancers who've come through Up Next walk in already knowing what to expect, what to bring, and what questions to ask. Their fittings move faster because the foundational education is already done. Either way — orientation or not — we always reiterate the one-on-one education during the fitting itself. Nothing about pointe is assumed.

The brand and style we reach for first depend entirely on what we hear. A dancer who's been in Bloch and feels like the platform is too narrow needs different shoes than a dancer who loved her last Bloch but outgrew them. A dancer who started pointe last fall is in a different category than a dancer prepping for variations. We don't open a single shoebox until we understand the dancer's situation.

Strength and readiness, checked before the shoes go on

Pointe shoes don't fix bad pointe. We watch the dancer go through a short series of balances and movements before we put her in shoes — to see what her ankles do, where her weight goes, how much strength she has on rise. This takes maybe ten minutes and tells us things the dancer herself often doesn't realize.

Sometimes the takeaway is good news: she's ready, she's strong, let's keep going. Sometimes it's a conversation about pre-pointe work or a shoe choice that supports what she's still building. Either way, we'd rather know before the shoes are on her feet than after.

For first-time pointe dancers, we require teacher approval before scheduling a fitting. Dancing en pointe without it can lead to serious injury, and we'd rather have the conversation upfront than risk a dancer being put on pointe before her body is ready. It's not about gatekeeping — it's about getting it right the first time.

Measuring the foot like it matters

Most fittings stop at length. We measure length, width, instep, heel, and arch — and we look at toe shape, flexibility, and where the foot sits inside the box when it's en pointe. Two dancers wearing the same street shoe size can need completely different pointe shoes because of how their feet are built and how their feet move.

Our lead fitter Hannah anchors this part of the process. She's a trained dancer and student of kinesiology — and she sees things in a foot that most fitters miss. The tools are simple: a Brannock device, a tape measure, our hands, our eyes. None of it takes long. All of it matters.

Trying multiple brands — not just what's on the shelf in front of her

Here's what most online retailers can't do, and what some local stores won't: put three different brands on a dancer's feet in the same hour and let her feel the difference.

Bloch sits differently than Capezio. Gaynor Minden behaves differently than Nikolay. So Danca has its own personality. We're an authorized retailer for all of them, which means the shoes on our shelves are exactly what the manufacturer intended — same construction, same materials, same quality control as the pair a professional dancer would order direct.

We try shoes in pairs. We watch the dancer rise, balance, and land. We push on the box, the shank, and the heel. And when something isn't right, we say so — even if it's the brand the dancer came in convinced she wanted. The point of a fitting is the right pair, not the pair the dancer expected.

What you walk out with

By the end of a fitting, you walk out with pointe shoes that fit. You also walk out with everything else you need to dance in them: the right ribbons and elastic, sewn or not depending on time and preference, plus pads, toe spacers, or other accessories specific to that dancer's foot. We talk through breaking the shoes in, drying them between wears, and when to start thinking about the next pair.

If the dancer is a first-timer, we slow down. If she's a returning customer trying a new brand, we move faster. If she's competing or auditioning soon, we adjust the timeline. The fitting flexes around the dancer — not the other way around.
